A pair of long coiled springs stretched back from the front of the garage, one on each side, is an extension system: each spring is anchored to the front framing and pulls on a cable and pulley to lift its half of the door. A single spring, or a pair, wound on a steel shaft above the opening is a torsion system. Three reasons, in order of weight. A torsion system holds the door with the shaft and cable drums rather than with two long springs under tension across the ceiling, so a failure is contained instead of releasing a spring across the garage. The inspection checklist the trade publishes asks specifically whether extension springs have a containment cable running through the center of each spring, and on a great many original installations the answer is no. Second, a torsion door is easier to balance accurately, which is what protects the operator. Third, torsion springs are available in high-cycle ratings, so the replacement interval can be chosen rather than accepted.
A conventional torsion conversion needs roughly twelve inches of clear space between the top of the opening and the ceiling for the shaft, the drums and the bearing plates. Older single-bay garages frequently do not have it, which is where people are told a conversion is impossible. It usually is not. Low-headroom torsion hardware moves the shaft configuration and the drums, and a rear-mount arrangement places the shaft at the back of the horizontal rails. Both are real products with their own hardware sets and their own labor. What decides between them is measured on site: headroom, backroom, the depth of the header, and whether anything is already occupying the ceiling.
A torsion system concentrates the whole counterbalance load into the header above the door and the two end bearing plates. The industry's mounting guidance is explicit that hardware must be fastened to surfaces capable of withstanding fastener and spring-tension forces, that installers should inspect jambs, headers and ceiling structures particularly on retrofit work, and that mounting into drywall is not acceptable, with the drywall cut away or a wood buck secured to the building instead. On an older garage that often means adding a proper header plate or blocking before any hardware goes up. It is a real line item and it is not optional.
Some pre-1980 garages here still carry a single rigid door that tilts outward and up on pivot arms, and a conversion in that case is not a spring job at all: the door itself is replaced with a sectional door and then given a torsion system. Two facts are worth knowing before starting. The federal operator rule does not permit unattended, phone-initiated closing on one-piece or swinging doors, so a one-piece door cannot be made into a smart door. And because the whole assembly changes, this is the point at which the opening, the jambs and the header all get measured properly rather than worked around.
A conversion is a specified job, not a parts swap. The scope should name the shaft diameter and length, the spring wire size, inside diameter and length, the cycle rating you are paying for, the drum model matched to door height, the bearing plates and center bearing, new lift cables, the removal of the extension springs, pulleys and their anchors, and any header or jamb reinforcement. The door should be weighed rather than estimated, since the spring selection follows the actual weight. Ask to see the balance test at the end, described under spring repair, and if the reason for converting was a household with children or a pre-sale concern, the documented version of that check is a safety inspection.
