Two layers of entrapment protection are required. The first is inherent, built into the drive, and it is what makes a door moving down begin reversing within two seconds of meeting an obstruction and then travel back to fully open. The second is external: either a control requiring constant pressure and installed within sight of the door, or a device such as a photoelectric pair or an edge sensor. The trade's published checklist calls for a solid object an inch and a half high, such as a piece of two-by-four at least six inches long, laid flat on the floor under the center of the door. The door is closed onto it. A passing door touches the object and reverses. A door that stops and sits, that pauses and pushes, or that reverses only after several seconds, fails. This is deliberately a physical test rather than an electronic one, because it measures what the door actually does rather than what a control board reports. The same checklist tells the reader to stop at any answer of no and call a trained technician instead of continuing, which is the right instruction and the reason a homeowner inspection and a professional one are not the same product.
Three measurements complete the operator side. The photoelectric beam should sit no higher than six inches above the floor, which is low enough to detect a small child crawling and is routinely found mounted at knee height instead. The door's warning labels should be present and legible in the places the industry specifies: at the spring or bracket, on the back of the door, and near the bottom corner brackets. And the manual release should be visually distinct from the rest of the operator, adjustable to six feet above the floor so it can be reached without a ladder, and able to release an obstructed door under a pull of no more than fifty pounds. A release cord tied up out of reach or removed entirely is a failure.

An unbalanced door is a safety finding, not a comfort one. If the door is heavy, the operator's force setting has usually been raised to compensate, and a raised force setting is exactly what defeats the inherent reversal protection the federal rule requires. So a report that lists a passing reversal test on a door with a raised force setting is describing a coincidence. The correct sequence is to disconnect the operator, weigh or lift the door by hand, record whether it holds at waist height, restore the balance mechanically, and only then verify the reversal and the sensors.
For a sale, a rental turnover or a household with young children, the point of hiring this out is the document. It should record the operator's manufacturer, model and date, whether external entrapment protection is present and of what type, the beam height in inches, the result of the reversal test with the object described, the release pull and its height, the label condition, the balance result, the spring type and any containment cables, and the condition of cables, rollers, hinges and bottom brackets. Each finding should be marked pass, fail or repair recommended. If the door needs work rather than a report, that is a tune-up, and if the failure is confined to the beam and its wiring, it is sensor repair.
