What genuinely warrants an after-hours call

Four situations move to the front of the queue. A door standing open that will not come down leaves the house open. A door that has left its rail is holding its own weight on whatever cables and rollers are still engaged. A broken spring means the door either sits on the slab and will not lift or is being held by hardware never designed to carry it. And a vehicle needed in the morning behind a dead door is a real problem, not an inconvenience. Storms are the local reason for the overnight call

Thunder is heard on fifty to sixty days in a typical year in north Georgia, and summer storms here bring wind, limbs and outages together. Three failures follow. A limb or blown debris strikes a section or bends a rail. A pressure differential from a slammed door or a gust loads the door in a way it was not designed for. And the power goes out, at which point an operator without a backup battery is a dead weight above the door. That last one is the most common overnight call of the summer and the one most easily prevented.

The release cord, and the four places to grip a door

Every operator has a manual release, usually a red cord on the trolley. It is meant to be pulled with the door fully closed. Pulling it with the door part-way up on a broken spring lets the door drop, because the operator was the only thing holding it. Once released, the door is lifted by hand, and there is a published standard for where hands go: ANSI/DASMA 116 requires four gripping points, two inside and two outside, within eight inches of the bottom edge of the bottom section, on the second or third section and vertically in line with each other. A section-to-section joint is not a gripping point, and using one is how people lose fingertips.

Make the opening safe, then wait for the truck

If the door is stuck open, disconnect the operator, get vehicles and people out from under the opening, and leave it. Do not prop the door with a ladder, a jack or a length of lumber, and do not lower a door whose spring has failed. If a section has come out of the rail, the same rule applies with more force. Where the door cannot be secured and the garage connects to the house, lock the interior door between the two and treat the garage as open until a technician arrives. The trade's own inspection sheet says plainly that with a broken spring you should not operate the door and should not attempt to remove, repair or adjust springs, cables, brackets or their mounting surfaces.

Older garages complicate a night visit

Access is a real variable after dark. Around the Church-Cherokee and Whitlock Avenue districts the garage often sits at the end of a narrow linear drive behind the house, sometimes shared with a neighboring lot, with no exterior lighting and a single circuit at the ceiling. A technician working there at eleven at night needs room for a vehicle and light to work under. Saying on the phone that the garage is detached, down a long drive, and unlit changes what comes on the truck, and it changes the arrival estimate honestly rather than after the fact.

What an emergency visit should and should not include

An after-hours call is priced differently from a scheduled one, and that difference belongs in the conversation before the truck rolls. What should happen on site is a stabilizing repair: the door secured, the counterbalance replaced or the door brought back into its rail, and the opening made closeable. What should not happen at midnight is a replacement door sold under pressure.
